Apple has released Thunderbolt Firmware Update which “provides Thunderbolt performance and stability fixes” for the 2011 MacBook Pro and iMac systems that are Apple’s first to feature Thunderbolt ports.

This update appears to be a system firmware update due to the gray screen with status bar indicator. Thunderbolt Firmware Update is available through Software Update or for download from Apple’s Support Downloads site.
